America’s 250th

Anniversary is coming in

2026!!!

  • One of the most successful and celebrated heroes of the American Revolution, the Marquis de Lafayette was a French nobleman and military officer who so believed in our cause for liberty and independence that he volunteered to leave France and join the Continental Army. He would rise to the rank of General under George Washington and played a key role both on the battlefield (including our victory in the Battle of Yorktown) and in securing French support for America throughout our War for Independence. Later, his role in the French Revolution would earn him the nickname “The Hero of the Two Worlds.”
  • In 1824, as our nation prepared to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our independence, President James Monroe wanted to build enthusiasm and patriotism across the United States.
  • The last living U.S. General of the Revolutionary War, General Lafayette was so adored by our nation that President Monroe invited him to return to the United States from France as “Guest of the Nation.”
  • His visit was an immediate success and a spectacular celebration of America! He was so well received that all 24 states were eager to welcome him and join in on the revelry. Originally scheduled to last just a few months, Lafayette’s Farewell Tour turned into an almost 2-year affair filled with celebrations from parades to dinners to galas. He was even invited to address Congress - the first foreign dignitary ever to do so!
  • And now, 200 years later on the exact date of his arrival, we of the Middletown Chapter, NSDAR and the American Friends of Lafayette are ready to celebrate the Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour where it all started -- where Lafayette first returned after a 40-year absence and again set his eyes on his adopted home, America, whose liberty he helped secure -- RIGHT HERE ON THE SANDY HOOK BAY off the coast of Middletown, New Jersey!
